Proposed R18+ classification for computer games in Australia

On Friday 22 July 2011, the Australian Minister for Justice, Brendan O’Connor, announced that an in-principle agreement had been reached between the States and the Commonwealth creating an adult category for computer games. All States, except New South Wales, have agreed in-principle support for the Commonwealth’s proposal to introduce an R18+ classification for computer games in Australia.

The proposed Guidelines for Classification (Guidelines) are not intended to provide for games containing extreme violence to be made for sale, but rather ensure that games containing high-level violence are restricted to adults. The games which are currently refused classification and banned from sale will continue to do so.

The Guidelines are said to ensure that games containing high-level violence and sexual material will be restricted to adults only, will bring Australia into line with other Western nations, and align classification much more closely with the content of the game.
