Report shows 457 program delivering skills in need

The Rudd Government’s changes to the temporary skilled migration scheme are delivering the skills Australia needs with new figures showing almost a quarter of all primary subclass 457 visas granted in the first five months of 2009–10 were for workers in the health care and social assistance sectors. Temporary skilled migration halved

Temporary skilled workers migrating to Australia have halved since this time a year ago, after more stringent workplace laws came into force. Immigration figures released yesterday show applications for category-457 visas plummeted 49 per cent in the five months to November, after the laws required employers to pay equal wages and lift conditions for foreign workers. Eleven held as net closes on illegal workers

Eleven Chinese nationals were detained by Immigration officials after raids in Adelaide’s northeastern suburbs targeting illegal construction workers. An Immigration spokesman said employers hiring illegal workers face fines of up to $13,200 and 2 years’ jail. Companies also face fines of up to $66,000 for each illegal worker if convicted. More...
