Budget includes changes to migration

The overall size of Australia’s migration program will remain the same but there will be a greater focus on the nation’s skills needs. The federal government has announced an additional 9150 places for the employer-sponsored migration program which will be balanced by a cut of 3600 general migration places. Temporary suspension of certain General Skilled Migration (GSM) applications

The Australian Government has decided to temporarily suspend the acceptance of certain General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa applications. This temporary measure will begin on 8 May 2010 and is expected to remain in effect until the end of 30 June 2010. The temporary suspension applies only to primary (main) applicants for the following visa subclasses: Subclass 175, 176 and 475. More...

Migration Amendment Regulations 2010 (No. 5)
These Regulations amend the Migration Regulations 1994 to prevent certain applications for General Skilled Migration visas being made on or after 8 May 2010 until after a specified date as a result of anticipated changes to the Skilled Occupation List.
