Gillard says the immigration debate is about planning affected by many factors - water supply, open space, infrastructure, ensuring the appropriate tax base to support our ageing population, the need for skills and the need to preserve a good quality life. Tony Burke’s portfolio has been renamed the Ministry of “Sustainable” Population, and announced he will produce a comprehensive policy in answer to the population problem later this year.

Reforms a ‘failure’ for migrant workers

Changes to the system of bringing in temporary migrant workers have failed to protect them from exploitation and in fact perpetuate discrimination, a new research paper says, claiming the federal government’s Migration Amendment (Worker Protection) Act is ‘’tinkering around the edges’’ of the problems with 457 temporary working visas.

DIAC introduces ANZSCO on 1 July 2010
Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) is being introduced by the department as the new standard to capture occupation information in all visa, settlement and citizenship programs. ANZSCO will also be used within skilled visa programs, where it is a requirement for visa eligibility, as the standard by which a visa applicant’s skills to undertake a specific occupation in Australia are assessed.
