Waller’s comments followed the release of KPMG’s Skilled Migration
Survey 2010, which found the re-emergence of acute skills shortages had driven
employers to increase their skilled migration intake. Employers looking to hire
workers on 457 visas needed to understand that many applicants would want to
bring their spouses and children to Australia, and that employers would be

Minister’s announcement about the new points test
On 11
November 2010 the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, the Hon Chris Bowen
MP, announced the government’s intention to implement a new points test applying
to certain skilled migration applications made on or after 1 July 2011. The new
points test will not apply to unfinalised applications lodged prior to 1 July
2011. The new points test will not change the generous transitional arrangements
in place until 31 December 2012 for former international students.
