What's News in Immigration - 12 September 2018

Immigration is an ever changing space. Over the past week the following changes have been announced:

Public disclosure of sanctions

The Department of Home Affairs (Immigration) may publish information, including personal information, about an approved sponsor or former sponsor who has failed to meet the applicable sponsorship obligations. This can be done without observing the rules of natural justice and no civil liability can arise from the publication of such information.

Collection of Tax File Numbers

Immigration will soon start collecting the tax file numbers for the purpose of verifying the TFN. The TFN may be requested from:

  • the applicant, visa holder or former visa holder
  • approved sponsor of the applicant, visa holder or former visa holder
  • a former approved sponsor of the applicant, visa holder or former visa holder
  • the nominator of an applicant or visa holder where the approved nomination has not ceased
  • the nominator of a visa holder or former visa holder where the approved nomination has ceased under the regulations.

Working Holiday Visa age increase

From 1 November 2018, Canadians up to the age of 35 will be able to apply for a Working Holiday Visa. The age has also been increased to 35 for Australians applying for a Working Holiday Visa for Canada.
