Values Statement
Our firm
We aim to be excellent lawyers providing top quality advice and service to
our clients.
We aim to achieve a high level of ethical behaviour and, in particular:
- we dont over-service or over-charge;
- we take conflicts seriously; and
- we treat our colleagues in other law firms with professional courtesy and
respect.
We consider ourselves unique among Australian law firms because we act for
all sections of the community.
Our legal practice is underpinned by a strong commitment to social justice,
with particular emphasis on human rights, the environment and the arts - values
which reflect our origins as lawyers for the labour movement.
Our clients
We listen to our clients and aim to have a close, mutually- beneficial working
relationship with them.
We recognise that everyone is entitled to competent legal representation; however,
we will not act for people:
- who are not prepared to act lawfully; or
- whose products or services cause significant harm to our society; or
- who ask us to defend conduct which involves a significant breach of fundamental
human rights.
Our staff
We recognise that our staff are our most important asset and we aim to provide
employment which is challenging, satisfying and enjoyable.
We aim to create a safe and environmentally responsible working environment
in which:
- the contribution of every individual is valued;
- our staff have the opportunity to develop;
- the need for our staff to balance their work responsibilities with other
responsibilities, including family, is recognised and respected;
- discrimination and harassment are not tolerated in any circumstance; and
- a diversity of people are welcome.
Our society
We consider that law firms have an obligation to our society which extends
beyond their legal and commercial activities.
We aim to make a meaningful contribution to our society by:
- supporting causes which are consistent with our belief in social justice,
including human rights, the environment and the arts;
- providing pro bono legal services to people, organisations and causes which
warrant such services; and
- encouraging our partners, lawyers and support staff to actively contribute
to organisations that advance the interests of the underprivileged in our
community.
